It's increased our profitability by 20%

Steven Blustein, DPM

A graduate of the New York College of Podiatric Medicine in New York City and board-certified podiatric surgeon, Dr. Blustein has been practicing podiatry in the Tampa Bay area for more than 25 years. During this time, he has seen the Ankle + Foot Center of Tampa Bay expand from a two-physician practice to a medical group with more than 10 physicians in 10 locations across the region.

In early 2011, Dr. Blustein and his colleagues realized the need to implement an EHR to keep up with the changing pace of the medical field. And while the practice knew its system needed updating, it was a security crisis involving the previous system vendor that ultimately drove Ankle + Foot Center to seek out Doctors Administrative Solutions.

“We needed to rapidly move to a new system, and when the time arose for us to make a decision DAS was there,” said Dr. Blustein. “They were very helpful and resourceful in addressing our needs. It was that individual attention and concern that made us ultimately choose them.”

In July 2011, Ankle + Foot Center of Tampa Bay went live on the Aprima EHR and PM system with DAS. Since then, they have worked together to refine the system, including customizing content specifically for podiatric care.

“It’s gotten to the point where it’s such a podiatry-specific program that it’s truly changed the way I chart. It has made me be more specific in my charting in some cases to where I am more thorough than I would be with a custom dictated note,” said Dr. Blustein.

The Aprima software has also increased transparency and accountability among the practice’s physicians in scheduling, billing and coding. The end result is improved performance among individual physicians, which in turn has driven a 20% increase in productivity and profitability among the group as a whole.

“Without the EHR, we would be spinning our wheels and working harder, not smarter,” said Dr. Blustein.

For other multi-office podiatrists looking to implement an EHR, Dr. Blustein suggests they think long term and implement one office at a time. He also emphasizes the importance of working with a vendor who can provide the necessary IT service and support.
