Gov. Scott signs budget, paving way for USF medical school in Vinik’s district in downtown Tampa

One of the anchors of Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik’s billion-dollar, mixed-use district in downtown Tampa cleared a key hurdle Thursday.

Gov. Rick Scott signed into law the state budget, which included $17 million in funding to move the University of South Florida’s Morsani College of Medicine to an acre of Vinik’s property at the intersection of Channelside Drive and Meridian avenues.

Moving the medical school downtown is viewed as a way to transform the city’s economy, with a focus on a recession-proof industry like healthcare.

“Until today, we have been cautiously optimistic that this project would move forward. Thanks to the strong commitment of the entire Hillsborough County legislative delegation and the support of Governor Rick Scott, we know today that this project will come to fruition,” Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn said in a statement.

“The new school will anchor the new development set to transform our southern downtown waterfront. Students, researchers, and medical professionals will now have immediate access to Tampa General Hospital in addition to the amenities that downtown has to offer.”

The governor vetoed $15 million for a downtown Orlando campus for the University of Central Florida.
